What Should You Do if You Have a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is an oral health problem that requires urgent care to relieve severe tooth pain, save a damaged tooth, treat an infection, or stop bleeding. The first thing to do is call our office as soon as possible. We will evaluate the emergency and have you come to see us immediately if needed. Some situations can wait until the next day, including a mild toothache or a lost filling.

When you arrive at your emergency appointment, Dr. Beckham will provide you with the necessary pain relief while evaluating your emergency. He will review your options and create a custom treatment plan with the most conservative solutions to address your urgent needs. Your comfort and well-being are always our top priorities as we restore your healthy smile.

Note: If you experience bleeding that won’t stop, a broken jaw, visible swelling, or a life-threatening emergency, please proceed to your nearest hospital emergency room or call 911 for assistance.

What Are the Most Common Dental Emergencies?

Severe Toothache: The most common emergency we see at Mt Si Dental Center is a severe toothache, which usually results from deep decay. If that’s the case, Dr. Beckham may recommend a root canal treatment to save the affected tooth and relieve your pain.

Knocked-Out-Tooth: The sooner you seek emergency care, the better the chances of saving the tooth. After calling our office for an emergency appointment, pick up the tooth by its crown without touching the root. Return the tooth to its socket if it is clean. Do not put a dirty tooth back into the socket. Otherwise, carry it in milk or saliva and bring it to your appointment. It is important to get the tooth placed back as soon as possible.

Broken, Fractured, or Chipped Tooth: Save any pieces of the tooth, if any, and bring them to your appointment. Meanwhile, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to relieve swelling. Contact us right away.

Swelling of the Face: Swelling around the face, gums, or mouth may indicate a serious infection requiring emergency dental care. Make sure to contact our office immediately. If unable to contact a dentist, go to the emergency room. Dental infections can be life-threatening.

Other Dental Emergencies: Other dental emergencies may include a loose tooth, an object caught between two teeth, a lost crown, a lost filling, or broken dentures. We will provide you with care tips and get you taken care of as soon as possible.

How Can You Prevent Dental Emergencies?

Make sure you brush and floss daily and visit Mt Si Dental Center for your twice-a-year dental exams and cleanings. If you play contact sports or grind your teeth in your sleep, wear a custom sports mouthguard or night guard to protect your smile. Prevention and prompt intervention are key to lowering your risk of developing an unexpected dental emergency.
